Reinforcement for Virkus: Nils Schmadtke is to become sports director

According to kicker information, Nils Schmadtke should return to Borussia and strengthen “Team Sport”, which also includes scouting director Steffen Korell. The exact position description is open; possibly Schmadtke sports director – settled one level below Roland Virkus (Managing Director Sport).

Recently there have been growing signs that the general analysis announced by Virkus could also lead to an expansion of the management area (kicker reported). Even in the days of Max Eberl, there were plans at Borussia to increase the number of people in the sports team in order to spread the diverse, labour-intensive tasks and areas of sporting responsibility over several shoulders.

In 2019, for example, Rouven Schröder, at that time still the sports director at Mainz 05, was a hot candidate for a move to Gladbach – in the end Eberl decided against getting a new man to work at his side. Now the model came on resubmission.

Schmadtke knows the structures in Borussia Park. The son of the new Liverpool sports director Jörg Schmadtke was employed at Borussia from April 2019 to May 2020, at that time as a scout.
