Saint-Gilles Hosts Inclusive Olympiads Ahead of Paris Games

This is a first in the history of the town. One year before the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris, the municipal team offers Olympiads, Saturday July 1 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Prepared in close collaboration with the Saint-Gilles associations, the idea of the event is to encourage meetings, exchanges as well as the discovery and practice of sports activities while raising awareness among the population of handicapped situations.

Volleyball, judo, table tennis, fencing…

On the sports fields of La Rompude and in the Maurice-Bousquet room, 28 mixed teams will compete in 14 events: fencing, football, tennis, taekwondo, GRS, volleyball, handball, basketball, judo, ping- pong, badminton, rugby, petanque, quiz. The scores (maximum ten points per workshop), reported in real time via an application, will result in a ranking.

“It will be an inclusive day, says Sylvain Alet, deputy sports delegate and project leader. We want people with physical or mental disabilities to take part. On certain events, able-bodied participants will also be placed in disability.”

A brand sponsor

Paralympic team fencing champion in Athens in 2004 and fourth at the Beijing Games, David Maillard will sponsor the event. For him, a birthright hemiplegic, “these Olympics which convey all the values of Olympism take on a particular meaning. Sport is a fantastic tool, it makes it possible to break down the barriers between able-bodied and invalid.” Fencing remains the biggest supplier of French medals in the history of the Games. Happy to introduce this sport to Saint-Gillois, David Maillard adds: “The discipline has become more democratic in recent years. It carries essential values such as respect for the rules, the opponent and the teacher.”
