What had been hinted at in the past few weeks was made official by SC Freiburg on Thursday: Junior Adamu is coming to Breisgau from RB Salzburg. According to kicker information, the 22-year-old Austrian national striker is due a sum of six million euros plus performance-related bonuses.
“Junior is an offensive player who can be used in a variety of ways, who can play centrally but can also play hanging,” said SCF board member Jochen Saier, describing the qualities of Adamus in a club statement. “He has an intense style of play, a good move towards goal and puts himself at the service of the team. As with all our young players, he still has real development potential. We want to fully exploit that through working together. Look at his attitude and our way of working we are optimistic about the future.”
Already 14 Champions League games
Despite his young age, the 1.83 meter tall striker already has experience from 14 Champions League games (two goals) and two appearances in the Europa League. He made six appearances for the Austrian national team and scored 17 goals in 58 appearances in the Austrian Bundesliga. Born in Nigeria, Adamu came from Grazer AK to Salzburg in 2015, which he left on loan to Swiss FC St. Gallen in the second half of the 2020/21 season. In the past season he was not part of the permanent staff at the Austrian champions.
“SC Freiburg has a very good reputation in Austria, which was confirmed in my talks with those in charge and people who know the club well. I want to get even better and assert myself in the German Bundesliga. That’s what Freiburg is for the right place”, Adamu explains his move to the SCF.
Adamu, whose contract in Salzburg would have run until 2025, is the first summer signing in fifth place in the Bundesliga last season and will wear number 20 in the future.
