Stefanos Tsitsipas Suffers Setback in Grass Season Ahead of Wimbledon

He will come to Wimbledon with a tiny victory on grass in… three tournaments. Already disappointing at ‘s-Hertogenbosch and Halle, Stefanos Tsitsipas did not recover at all on Wednesday on the grass of Mallorca. Yet defending champion and seeded 1 – which exempted him from the 1st round – the Greek did not manage to get out of the trap set by the German Yannick Hanfmann, 48th in the world. He thus gave up in three sets (6-4, 3-6, 6-2) and 1h45 of play in the 2nd round. Its winner will face Feliciano Lopez or Jordan Thompson in the quarterfinals.

Is it a crisis of confidence, a lack of confirmation, both? It’s hard to know what’s going on in Stefanos Tsitsipas’ mind right now, but something is not quite right. If starting his tournament against a player like Yannick Hanfmann, in form since the clay season, was not a gift, the Greek is sorely lacking in continuity in his tennis at the moment. After a diesel start, however, winning the second set seemed to have launched him… Nothing happened.

A failed preparation for Wimbledon

Tsitsipas thus collapsed in the final act, conceding the break in a rather incomprehensible way in the 4th game. He thus led quite calmly 40/30, before aligning two double faults and a gross error in a forehand in the net . Once the gap was made by his opponent, the Greek simply dropped the ramp, conceding a final break to finish.

Difficult under these conditions to be optimistic for the world number 5 before Wimbledon where he never exceeded the round of 16. However, he should not lack physical freshness at the All England Club: he has only played 4 matches in the last three weeks.
