The departure of Marcus Smart has been a blow to many Boston fans. The point guard was one of the most beloved players among the fans, and especially considering that it was initially announced that the man who would leave in exchange for Porzingis would be Malcolm Brodgon, seeing him head to Memphis has been painful. Brad Stevens himself, general manager of the franchise, shares this sentiment, but acknowledged that these are decisions that sometimes need to be made.
“I said it at the beginning of the summer: we needed to balance our squad and we were going to find the best ways to do it,” he commented. “And by that I meant that we were likely to let out very, very good players. We ask ourselves ‘what is our best opportunity to improve?’ And for that, sometimes you have to make very tough decisions.
«The best legacy you can leave is the feeling that a place is where you arrived, and I think we all feel that with him. He will always be well loved for many reasons. Everyone loves the kind of plays he makes and how hard he plays, but also his work in the community. We are all very grateful to him and it is a shame to see him go ».

These types of decisions are always difficult to make, but sometimes trying to improve requires making these types of emotional sacrifices. Something similar happened when DeMar DeRozan left Toronto to receive a Kawhi Leonard who arrived generating many doubts after spending a season without playing, but the ring he got a year later made it easier to forget. Will Boston be able to say the same in 12 months?
