The Long Road Back: Dominic Thiem’s Journey to the Top of the World After Injury

It is exactly two years ago today that Dominic Thiem injured his wrist at the ATP tournament in Mallorca and was forced to take an 8-month break from the tournament. The way back to the top of the world is still difficult for a number of reasons.

There is still a lot to do for Dominic Thiem on the way to the top of the world.

Physio Alex Stober suspected it right away when Dominic Thiem had to give up the match against Frenchman Adrian Mannarino while in the lead at the ATP 250 event in Mallorca on June 22nd, 2021. With the words “cracking is never a good sign”, he feared a longer period of suffering, which should ultimately keep the Lichtenwörther from tournament tennis for eight months.

While the results with the proven team were manageable at the beginning, the complete renewal of the team around the 29-year-old should initiate the trend reversal and pave the way from outside the top 100 back to the top of the world. Although the first step has been taken with the return to the double-digit area in the ATP ranking, the previous balance sheet is rather sobering compared to expectations.

Before the injury, big matches, victories and participation in finals were still the order of the day, which were a matter of course in the game. Thiem recently reflected to the newspaper “Krone”: “I’m slowly realizing that this was anything but a matter of course.”

Despite the meager yield of 25 wins in a total of 54 matches that the 2020 US Open champion has won in his 36 tournament appearances since the comeback, the former No. 3 in the world sees himself well positioned in the long term with his new coach Benjamin Ebrahimzadeh. “My big goal is to get back to my performance limit and to become the best version of myself.” The next test is the major event in Wimbledon, where the Lower Austrian wants to win his first Grand Slam victory since his injury .
