The madness of Karl Malone’s wife with the Dream Team: “She has them all…”

Member of the incredible team formed by Team USA for the 1992 Olympics, Karl Malone did not make the trip to Barcelona alone. Accompanied by his wife, he can today thank her for her brilliant gesture made at the time in the locker room.

If he had not yet had the chance to take part in even a series of NBA Finals, his status as a superstar was still not the shadow of a doubt. Already perceived as one of the best big men in the league in 1992, Karl Malone was logically retained by Chuck Daly to defend the colors of the United States at the Olympic Games. The company of the members of Team USA was not enough for him, however.

Author of a very solid Olympic tournament with 14.8 points and 5.8 rebounds on average, Malone obviously won the gold medal with Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird & Co. He was also able to share his joy with his wife, present on the scene at the time of the final. Invited into the locker room, the latter then rushed… on the team’s jerseys, as the Mailman tells Goldin :

I wish I could take all the credit, but I can’t. After we opened the locker room to our families, our shirts were lying on the floor. So my wife started picking them all up, and that’s how I was able to collect them.

A genius initiative on the part of Kay Kinsey, the former supermodel who got engaged to Malone in 1990, since she finally allowed their couple to amass a nice jackpot.

The recent auction of the various tunics has indeed met with immense success with collectors, who have logically fought to get their hands on each of them. Apart from the one oh so popular with Michael Jordan, sold for the staggering sum of 3.03 million dollars, the 11 others brought in Malone and his wife more than 1M$ additional. NBC Sports reports:

Besides Jordan’s, the following jerseys from Malone’s collection were also sold: Larry Bird ($360,000), Magic Johnson ($336,000), Charles Barkley ($230,400), David Robinson ($116,400), Clyde Drexler ( $91,200), Scottie Pippen ($80,400), Malone ($58,800), John Stockton ($55,200), Patrick Ewing ($39,600), Christian Laettner ($39,600) and Chris Mullin ($37,200).

By seizing almost innocently the jerseys worn by the Dream Team during the final of the 1992 Olympics, the companion of Karl Malone has achieved a real stroke of genius. As a result, some 5 million dollars have just fallen into their pocket!
