The Uganda national badminton players team left for the Maldives in high spirits ahead of the Lining Maldives 2023 International Challenge.
Two players Husinah Kobugabe and Tracy Naluwooza accompanied by a coach, Betty Apio left Entebbe International Airport on Saturday morning aboard Fly Dubai.
These will be joined by two other players Mohammed Shamika Fadilah and Gladys Mbabazi.
Fadilah has been in a training camp in India while Mbabazi is connecting from Denmark.
According to Mohamed Naseer, Chief Operating Officer of the Badminton Association of Maldives, the Lining Maldives 2023 International Challenge officially starts on the 5the June until 10e June 2023 at Male Kulhivaru Ekuveni Indoor Badminton Hall.
Kobugabe, who will embark on his journey through the main draws, is optimistic about a strong performance in the championship.
“I will start with the main draw. I’m excited and expecting a great performance at the Maldives International Challenge. My preparation was good before this championship,” Kobugabe told Kawowo Sports at Entebbe International Airport.
Teenager Naluwooza, like Kobugabe, also said she was ready to give her best at the tournament.
“Base from the preparation with a good training. I am ready to live up to my expectations and perform well,” said Naluwooza.
Apio, who is traveling as the team’s head coach, is excited that the tournament will further expose Ugandan players and provide a great platform to rack up international ranking points.
“Maldives International Badminton Challenge has attracted so many good players from all over the world. It will be a great platform for our players to learn from the best in the world, challenge them, and best of all, first for international ranking points. The team is in good spirits,” Apio, a certified Level 2 coach, said moments before the start.
The Uganda Badminton Association (UBA) in conjunction with the National Sports Council (NCS) helped facilitate the team’s trip to the Maldives.
