Ahn Se-young said that her skills had stagnated for the past five years. Ahn Se-young said, “I lost (in the final), but I was happy. Unlike last year, when I was dragged around defending and couldn’t use my speed, there are more rallies where I lead. Above all, he did not dwell on winning or losing as before. I thought, ‘I enjoyed it’.” He then laughed, saying, “Now I believe myself to be ‘attacking to a certain extent’.” In fact, since then, Ahn Se-young has been on a winning streak.
Ahn Se-young was reborn as one of the ‘big four’ in badminton women’s singles along with Chen Yu-fei, Yamaguchi, and Tai Zi-ying (Taiwan, 4th in ranking). She has the best momentum out of the four. Until last year, she was greatly inferior to Chen Yufei with 1 win and 8 losses and Yamaguchi with 5 wins and 10 losses, but she prevailed this year with 3 wins and 2 losses respectively.
You deserve to be proud of your elevated status. Ahn Se-young thinks differently. “I am not at that level yet. There are times when being stuck between them is suffocating,” he said. “How can I evaluate my skills based on the results of the past few months. I lost a lot to them before that,” he said calmly.
Above all, I think the difference in achievement is huge. Chen Yufei is a gold medalist at the 2022 Tokyo Olympics, and Yamaguchi is a player who has won two consecutive World Championships (2021-2022). Ahn Se-young said, “I haven’t achieved anything yet. Of course, there is no room for pride.”
Off the court, Ahn Se-young is serious and has many thoughts. That side of her helped her evaluate herself objectively as well. That is why he has risen to the top class.
Acknowledge that your competitors’ skills are one step above your own. But I have no intention of losing the game. Ahn Se-young said, “I have more confidence that I can catch (the world’s top rankers) than before. Like those players, I will quickly create and show my own (game) style.”
Ahn Se-young’s goal is to show a hot ceremony on a higher stage. He said, “I want to rise to the top of the rankings, and I want to win the Asian Games, World Championships, and Olympic gold medals. Just like there is a grand slam in tennis (conquering four major tournaments), I want to do everything I can achieve at least once. It’s still a long way, but I want to follow in the footsteps of senior Bang Soo-hyun step by step.”
Winning the Jeonyeong Open is the first step. The World Championships in August and the Asian Games in Hangzhou in September are waiting for Ahn Se-young.
