Alexander Zverev is optimistic about the 2023 Wimbledon tournament
“In terms of sport, I want to get back to where I was. I want to win Grand Slam tournaments and become number one in the world. Those are my big goals,” the 26-year-old from Hamburg told Sports Illustrated magazine before the tournament started in Wimbledon : “Last year I was close.”
Zverev, currently ranked 21st, became number two shortly after his serious ankle injury at the French Open in mid-June 2022 and remained so until early September despite the following break in play. It didn’t take much to become the second German in the world rankings after Boris Becker (1991 twelve weeks number one).
Zverev opens against Brouwer
“I should have only won one match in the following three months after Paris, no matter what tournament,” said Zverev: “It wasn’t easy for me to accept. Of course I want to come back. I’m looking forward to the next few weeks and above all years.”
At least the leap into the top 10 is possible for Zverev again in a timely manner. Due to his long forced break, he has no world ranking points to defend until the end of the year. In Wimbledon (July 3rd to 16th) Zverev meets Dutch qualifier Gijs Brouwer in the first round.
