Every Swiatek is in the round of 16 in Wimbledon without losing a set. This series was almost broken, however, since Petra Martic fought back in the second set with a big fight. Swiatek made an unusual number of careless mistakes in the second round, lost the game to win the match with his own serve to 0 and thus gave hope to the Croatian again. There was a surprise in the last game of the evening: Caroline Garcia was defeated by Marie Bouzkova in 3 sets. The French played a desolate tie-break in the first set, which she immediately lost 7-0. After that, the favorite caught herself a bit, but couldn’t really take the momentum into the 3rd set. Again and again she struggled to accommodate the balls in the opponent’s field. When the score was 5:6, Garcia couldn’t stand the pressure and conceded the break that decided the game.
Kvitova comes through – Jabeur makes short work of Bai
Our Jabeur easily wins her second round game. It took the Tunisian just 44 minutes to beat Zhuoxuan Bai 6-1, 6-1. The victory comes as no surprise, however, as 28-year-old Jabeur is a whopping 185 places ahead of the Chinese in the world rankings.
The two-time Wimbledon champion Peter Kvitov is in the third round. In 74 minutes, the 33-year-old Czech clearly prevailed in two sets against Alexandra Sasnowitsch. However, in a game marked by many mistakes, Kvitova did not have to show her best tennis. The winner of 2011 and 2014 consistently had the upper hand and won the first set due to a double fault by her opponent. Sasnowitsch was able to equalize with a break to make it 1-1 in the second set, but subsequently had no chance.
Have to say goodbye to Wimbledon Daria Kasatkina. The Russian never really found her way into the game against Victoria Azarenka and therefore had to admit defeat in 2 sets after only 76 minutes. Azarenka is in the round of 16 at Wimbledon for the first time since 2017.
Crazy duel between Tsurenko and Bogdan
Lesia Tsurenko (UKR/WTA 60) and Ana Bogdan (ROU/WTA 57) fought an unbelievable game on Court 14. The duel was only decided in an epic match tiebreak – and how. Tsurenko prevailed in the decision with 20:18, whereby both players were at the end of their strength.
No wonder, since they had delivered a long rally after the other. The tiebreak alone lasted well over half an hour and the entire game 3 hours and 39 minutes.
