Azzurri Set New Track World Record at Junior European Championships in Portugal

New track world record at the Junior European Championships that are taking place in Portugal by the very young Azzurri. The quartet from Italy stopped the clock at 3’58”466.

Spatial performance of blue quartet at the European Juniores on track that are taking place in Portugal in Anadia (from 11 to 16 July) where our boys have accomplished the classic exceptional feat by signing the new world record on track for the category. The clock stopped at 3 minutes 58 seconds and 466 thousandths.

The awesome time has come during the first day of competition, in the qualifying round for the team pursuit, confirming how the Italian delegation once again enjoys an undisputed reputation as a favourite. Thus at the Velodromo Nacional Rua Ivo Neves the four Italians already outdid themselves in qualifying and put an exclamation point on what could happen in the final where the prestige of a medal will also be at stake.

This edition is particularly motivating because never before have so many cyclists and nations registered for the competition as in 2023: the total athletes in the race will be 420, representing 30 countries. There will be up for grabs 44 European titles, 22 under 23 and as many juniors, for a total of eleven disciplines of track cycling, including the Olympic ones: omnium, madison, team pursuit, individual sprint, team sprint and keirin.

Also this year the edition of the European Juniores lit up with a strong blue light. The dominance in the team pursuit qualifiers seems to be the starter for another crazy presence of our national team which has also dominated the youth level in 2022. Last year, Italian youth cycling had in fact shown to be in excellent health, clearing the 2022 edition with important numbers: first place in the medal table for titles won, with 23 medals wonof which 16 gold, 6 from the speed sector, three Italian records retouched, bringing more than half of the athletes present in Portugal to medals.
