Baltimore Orioles Extend Win Streak with 5-4 Victory over Miami Marlins

Kyle Bradish went seven and a third scoreless innings in a 5-4 victory for the Baltimore Orioles, who held off a late comeback from the Miami Marlins on Sunday.

The Orioles won their eighth straight game, but they nearly lost their 5-0 lead in the ninth inning when the Marlins opened the machine with a four-run push.

Ultimately, it was reliever Danny Coulombe who got the last out of the game at the expense of Luis Arraez, who has long flirted with a .400 batting average this season, when the tying run was at second base.

Arraez was shut out in five appearances at the plate and his batting average is now .380.

Anthony Santander hit his 100th career home run for the Orioles, who started the day two games behind Tampa Bay at the top in the East. They had taken a 3-0 lead before Marlins starter Steven Okert (3-1) even got a first-inning out. In fact, Okert only pitched a third of an inning after giving up three earned runs on four hits.

For his part, Bradish (6-4) allowed just three hits while getting eight strikeouts.

Eduard Bazardo gave up a two-run double to Jean Segura with one out in the ninth, but Coulombe got the final two outs for his first save in 233 games.

The Marlins have lost two of three games in this series by one point after going 21-6 in games that ended by one point before the All-Star break.

Gunnar Henderson and Adley Rutschman opened the game with back-to-back doubles to make it 1-0, and Santander followed with their 17th homer of the year. Okert allowed a single to Austin Hays before finally retiring Ryan O’Hearn on a fly ball. The left-hander then left the game.

The Orioles scored twice in the fourth without even hitting a hit. George Soriano loaded the bases with one out with a walk and hitting two batters. A run came on an error by shortstop Joey Wendle on a play that could have been a double play.

Henderson followed with a sacrifice fly against Huascar Brazoban.

Bradish left the game after throwing 100 shots as the Orioles led 5-0 while relievers Felix Bautista and Yennier Cano enjoyed a day off. The Marlins eventually scored four points.

De La Cruz: a defensive stint at 97.9 mph

The Milwaukee Brewers overcame a two-point deficit to beat the Cincinnati Reds for the fifth time in six games to win 4-3.

Rookie Andruw Monasterio broke the tie with a one-run single on a two-run drive in the eighth inning.

After winning two of their three home games before the All-Star weekend break, the Brewers swept all three games against the Reds.

The Brewers now have a two-game lead over the Reds in the National’s Central Division.

The game was marked by an explosive throw from young shortstop Elly De La Cruz, who pinned speedy Joey Wiemer at first base with an arrow rated at 97.9 miles per hour.

It’s the strongest stint on record in MLB for infield defensive play since the StatCast tool was introduced in 2015.

Christian Yelich hit his 14th homer in the third inning and cut the Reds’ lead to 3-2 with a fifth-inning single.

Jake Fraley hit a two-run long ball for the Reds, who had been shut out in their previous three games.

Hoby Milner (1-0) conceded a hit in two runless innings, while Devin Williams needed just nine pitches in a perfect ninth inning to be credited with a 23rd save in 25 occasions.

Joey Votto ended the Reds’ 28-run scoreless streak with a second-inning double.
