Carlos Alcaraz Wins First Wimbledon, Ending Novak Djokovic’s Unbeaten Streak

Carlos Alcaraz has won his first Wimbledon today, after beating Novak Djokovic in a final to remember. In the London tournament ‘Nole’ had accumulated 34 games in a row without losing, since he did so against the Czech Berdych in 2017. This streak has helped the Serbian to be among the best unbeaten streaks in Grand Slam history despite today’s loss. Below we review the best unbeaten streaks in tennis history.

5. Djokovic, Wimbledon (2018-?) 35 consecutive wins

The current streak Djokovic’s is the fifth best in Grand Slam history. The Serbian defeated Kevin Anderson in three sets in the 2018 edition. It was the first Grand Slam for ‘Nole’ since Roland Garros in 2016. In 2019 he defeated Federer in a final to remember. In 2020 the event was canceled due to the coronaviruswhile in 2021 and 2022 he defeated Berrettini and Kyrgios, respectively.

4. Rafael Nadal, Roland Garros (2010-2015) 39 consecutive victories

The best player in clay court history set the cap at 39 consecutive victories at Roland Garros. The manacorí defeated Soderling, who deprived him of signing a stratospheric record in 2009, since he was the only player who defeated Nadal in the Parisian event between 2005 and 2015. In 2011 and 2012 he surpassed Federer and Djokovic, his two biggest rivals in his career. In 2013 he defeated Grand Slam final debutant Ferrer in a Spanish duel, and in 2014 he beat the Serb again, just a year before Djokovic ended that streak in the 2015 quarterfinals.

3. Roger Federer, US Open (2004-2009) 40 consecutive wins

The Swiss ‘master’ chained 40 consecutive wins in the New York tournament between 2004 and 2009. Federer does not have 41 wins because in the 2004 edition the Romanian Pavel withdrew before he played his match round of 16 against Roger. In the finals he was able to defeat Hewitt (2004), Agassi (2005), Roddick (2006), Djokovic (2007) and Murray (2008). In 2009, a very young Del Potro avoided the sixth consecutive title for the Swiss tennis player in the final.

2. Roger Federer, Wimbledon (2003-2008) 40 consecutive wins

The Swiss appears again on this list. At Wimbledon, where he accumulates eight titles, he came to chain 40 wins in a row, one away from the historical record of the tournament. In 2003 he won his first ‘Grande’ after beating Philippuussis, while in 2004 and 2005 he defeated his generational rival, the American Andy Roddick. In the next three finals he faced Rafa Nadal, a tennis player to whom he won the first two and against whom he lost in the 2008 final, in a match considered the best in tennis history.

1. Bjorn Borg, Wimbledon (1976-1981) 41 consecutive wins

The longest consecutive Grand Slam winning streak belongs to ‘Iceborg’, as he was known in the tennis world. He was the absolute king of London weed between 1976 and 1980. In his first Wimbledon he defeated Nastase. In 1977 and 1978 he surpassed Connors, while the following year he won his fourth consecutive Wimbledon after beating Tanner, also an American. In the 1980 final, Borg beat McEnroe in one of the greatest matches in tennis history.. The following year the wayward New Yorker ended this incredible streak of the Swedish tennis player.
