Usually occurs. When a coach who has been a great player in the NBA meets a rookie occupying his new position on the court, it’s no surprise that the former takes the latter as a personal challenge. Well, that’s exactly what’s happening with Chauncey Billups and Scoot Henderson.
Billups, who begins his second season in charge of the Portland Trail Blazers bench, is clear that the number 3 in the last draft is a great talent who needs help to exploit all his qualities on the court. Therefore, he assures that he will do everything on his part so that he is the best possible player.
“It’s personal to me. I remember being a guy like him, also being number 3 in the draft, with the expectations that that entails. I want to give Scoot what he needed at that moment. I can do that. I’ve done everything he wants to do in this league. I had to fight a lot at the beginning, which I don’t want to happen with him,” says the head coach a David Aldridge de The Athletic.
Although Billups’ words are more than logical, since Henderson means a lot to the future of the Oregon organization, they also suggest that the organization is turning to the rookie as the center of everything. Although the player himself indicated after the draft that he hoped to play with Damian Lillard, he has since said that he sees himself capable of assuming that role if the All-Star leaves. Slowly, yes, but the Blazers are preparing for the trade.
