Costa Rican Sports Delegation Outperforms Expectations at 2023 Central American and Caribbean Games

San José, Jul 7 (Prensa Latina) The Costa Rican sports delegation to the 2023 Central American and Caribbean Games exceeded expectations in the number of medals, with three gold, eight silver and 19 bronze, local media highlighted today.

One day from the end of the event that is held in San Salvador, El Salvador, Costa Rica accumulates 30 medals, three more so far compared to those won in 1993, when the Central American nation brought home 27 laurels in the edition of the contest in Ponce, Puerto Rico.

Taekwondo was the sport that brought in the gold medals, and the silver ones, in addition to that discipline, were added to bowling, racquetball, surfing, tennis and wrestling.

The bronze medals were: athletics two, boxing four, team equestrian one, judo two, karate one, racquetball five, and one in surfing, swimming, table tennis and taekwondo.

The first award for Costa Rica was won by the judoka Sebastián Sancho who defeated the Mexican Arath Suárez and secured the bronze in the 60 kilograms.

According to official figures Costa Rica, at a historical level accumulates 189 medals; 38 gold, 47 silver and 104 bronze. Costa Rica has participated in the regional event since its second edition held in Havana, Cuba in 1930.
