The former javelin throw world champion Johannes Vetter did not manage the hoped-for performance for the jump to Budapest three weeks before the World Championships after a long injury break.

The cousin, who has been suffering from shoulder problems for a long time, threw 80.82 meters at the meeting in Leverkusen. With this best performance of the season, the 30-year-old from Offenburg finished second behind European champion Julian Weber, who won easily with 83.86 meters.

“I was serious. Today a lot was right, but not everything was right,” said Vetter afterwards on ARD, referring to automatisms that no longer fit together after a year and a half. “Nevertheless, I leave the competition with relatively little pain, which is a big step,” he added.

However, the international standard of the world athletics association is 85.20 meters, the German association requires a corresponding proof of performance by Sunday. With 88.72 meters, Weber is currently number two in the world and one of the German hopes for the World Cup from August 19th to 27th. According to his own statements, the man from Mainz was recently ill. “I was flat and a little tired,” explained the 28-year-old.
