Fortuna Düsseldorf’s Season Opener: Issues with Stadium Operator and City Authorities

Fortuna Düsseldorf in the heart of the city!

In front of 3000 fans, the second division team celebrated the opening of the season on Saturday at the Rheinkirmes. And it got exciting right from the start. The day after BILD reported how the stadium operator “D.live” and the city were slowing down the club with a lack of changes, higher rent and selfish scheduling, Fortuna boss Alexander Jobst (49) opened the event alongside Mayor Stephan Keller (52) – but he preferred to remain silent after his appearance instead of finally taking a stand and also taking action.

Mayor Keller is shirking answers!

On the podium, Keller once again showed himself to be a fan of the upcoming free games in the arena: “‘Fortune for everyone’ is the promise to make three games free, so I’m curious to see how that goes. I think that’s a really good idea. It’s going to be an exciting season and I hope Fortuna will finish it on top.”

BILD then spoke to Keller personally and asked him for a statement. But Keller only criticized the reporting and said goodbye with the words: “I’m on vacation now, please contact the press office.”

An hour later, BILD sent four questions by email, wanting to know from Keller’s spokesman whether Fortuna would finally get marketing rights in the arena for home games and when. And why Fortuna still doesn’t have it. BILD also asked about the reasons for the increase in rent (50 percent) and the scheduling of Depeche Mode concerts, which collided with the relegation after last season.

There was no reaction, however – Keller is shying away from answers!

Instead, Jobst spoke in front of the Fortuna fans at the season opener and emphasized again that it actually fits between Keller and the club – only the mayor is also responsible for the braking decisions of the urban “D.live”. Jobst to Keller: “Also because of the last few days and what has been read in the media: Thank you for personally accompanying us on the way to the creation of ‘Fortuna for everyone’ in a very confidential manner and for setting it up together.”

But Jobst also made it clear: “’Fortuna for everyone’ will be successful if we leave it out from three contributions. Fortuna opens up football and we give something back to the fans. A contribution is from our partners and sponsors who support this idea. And yes, the city will also make its contribution, we will gradually work together on the stadium, and that in the long term. I’ll keep it short: Good things take time. When I look at how we have worked together over the past few months, I am quite certain that we can do it for a successful Fortuna and a successful city.”

Now it’s up to Keller and the city – again…
