After a dismal debut with the San Antonio Spurs, French prodigy Victor Wembanyama made a big impression on Sunday, adding 27 points and 12 rebounds in his second game of the NBA Summer League.
The 2.24m tall center converted 9 of his 14 field goals, including 2 triples out of 4 attempts, and in defense he contributed 3 blocks and 1 steal, in a game that ended with the Spurs losing 85-80 against the Portland Trail Blazers in Las Vegas.
Disappointed in his debut
Carrying the highest expectations in the NBA since the arrival of LeBron James, ‘Wemby’ had disappointed on Friday in his debut with the Spurs uniform, staying at 9 points and 8 rebounds (2/13 shooting) in a victory Spurs against Charlotte Hornets.
The number one from the last Draft was much more effective this Sunday and adapted to the pace of the game, also sharpening his selection of shots, while in defense he exhibited again his fearsome intimidation.
Wembanyama lasted 27 minutes on the court at Thomas & Mack Arena and fueled a failed Spurs comeback attempt in the fourth quarter.
The Spurs’ next duel in the Summer League, an exhibition tournament in which franchises test their young players, will be on Tuesday against the Washington Wizards.
Wembanyama’s presence in that game is in doubt due to little rest since the French league final last month.
Portland point guard Michael Devoe was the game’s leading scorer with 29 points, while the team’s star in this tournament, guard Shaedon Sharpe, was erratic with just 9 points on 4/18 shooting.
