German Judoka Tabea Mecklenburg Wins Bronze at European Youth Olympic Festival in Maribor

At the European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF) in Maribor, Slovenia, 308 young people from 43 nations compete in judo. The festival has been held every two years since 1991 and only one athlete per weight class is allowed to start in judo per nation.

With the Olympic spirit, it is sports games in many sports. Team D is represented in the ten sports of basketball, handball, judo, artistic gymnastics, athletics, cycling, swimming, skateboarding, tennis and volleyball and is represented by a total of 109 athletes.

For the German Judo Federation, six athletes each are at the start for young women and men. For Brandenburg, Tabea Mecklenburg will start on the first day and Alica Thiele on the third day of competition.

Wins on the first day of competition on Wednesday Tabea Nika Mecklenburg first against the Greek Maria Eleni Gogua after 1:16 min with Ippon with a hold. Britain’s Lola Hodson beats her with a foot throw to ippon after 11 seconds in the golden score, and Hungary’s Luca Veg beats her with two waza-ari in less than a minute and a half. This puts her in the semi-finals of the EYOF. Against Spain’s Adriana Saez Hevia, she fell behind with two penalties for inactivity over the course of the bout and was beaten by waza-ari on the golden score after 22 seconds. That left her with the fight for 3rd place.

She makes short work of Elise Rustige from the Netherlands and throws at Waza-ari after 17 seconds. She immediately follows the ground and her opponent tees off. With this, Tabea Mecklenburg wins the bronze medal.
