Germany started the 2023 European U15 Baseball Championship in Trnava, Slovakia, with a narrow 6-7 defeat by Italy. Head coach Georg Bull’s team took the lead twice against the Squadra Azzurri. Four runs by the Italians in the fourth inning finally brought the decision in a close encounter. On Wednesday, Germany will meet the defending champions, the Czech Republic, in the second group game. The game is scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m.

The German national youth baseball team, which is supported by the German Baseball Academy, got off to a furious start in the preliminary round and took a 3-0 lead in the first inning thanks to a bases-clearing double by Kyran Norgren. But Italy immediately equalized in the same section. Two balk decisions and an RBI single pushed three runs down home plate against starting pitcher Pepe Stockhaus.

In the fourth inning, the German team regained the lead. Kyran Norgren used a wild pitch to make it 4:3. But again the opponent’s answer followed. A bases-loaded walk, a 2-run single and a hit-by-pitch with loaded bases put Italy ahead 7-4. In the sixth inning, Germany pressed for equalization. RBI singles from Dalton Deadman and Jules-Noah Moser cut to 6-7. But it wasn’t enough as a result.

Pepe Stockhaus, Jules-Noah Moser and Fabian Spiess pitched. Moser was written to at the end of the loss. Dalton Deadman and Kyran Norgren each garnered two hits. Six players were able to score a run. Norgren posted three RBI.
