Iberdrola and AEDIVE electrify heavy freight transport |

Iberdrola and the Business Association for the Development and Promotion of Electric Mobility (AEDIVE) have signed an agreement to create an alliance for the electrification of heavy road transport in Spain.

The initiative seeks to accelerate the decarbonization of heavy road transport and combat climate change. At the same time, it aims to improve efficiency in fuel consumption, limit its high consumption, and reduce the cost for logistics operators and for the country.

Iberdrola and the Alliance of CEOs for the Recovery, Reform and Resilience of Europe (CEO Alliance For Europe) have detected the need to join forces. The alliance is conceived as a common place where all the companies in the heavy goods transport value chain come together, identify bottlenecks and propose solutions to accelerate the electrification of road transport.

It is the first alliance that brings together all the sectors involved in the electrification of heavy road transport: manufacturers, charging infrastructure, logistics operators and end customers. The objective is to establish a strategic collaboration between its members and position the Spanish industry as a driving force in electrification, more specifically, the transport of goods by road.

The initiative also aims to develop a roadmap, making it a pioneer in Europe, and serve as a lever to adapt and accelerate the regulation necessary to achieve decarbonisation objectives.

The alliance was presented at an event at the Iberdrola offices in Madrid attended by more than 100 representatives of public administrations, sectoral organizations and companies linked to the entire value chain of the heavy goods transport sector.

“Driving an electric truck will be cheaper than a diesel one in about five years. To speed up this moment, the EU has recently passed legislation on heavy road transport, which poses a huge challenge for carriers, logistics companies and energy companies. The Alliance that we are presenting today will help us all to seek, together, solutions that allow for the successful electrification of heavy transport in Spain with benefits for the competitiveness of a key sector in the Spanish economy”, stated Agustín Delgado, Director of Innovation and Sustainability of the Iberdrola Group.

The general director of AEDIVE, Arturo Pérez de Lucia, has indicated that “this alliance, which will be managed in the Iberian market by AEDIVE, seeks to optimize the promotion of the entire industrial, technological and service value chain focused on electric mobility in heavy goods transport and accelerate progress towards the electrification of a key sector in wheeled mobility”.

The alliance is aligned with the fight against climate change of the European Union and with its objective that all member countries reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% in 2030.

In the European Union, heavy goods transport represents only 1% of the total vehicle fleet. However, it is responsible for 25% of greenhouse gas emissions and the energy consumption of road transport.

Aware of the importance of decarbonizing this sector, the European Union has established requirements for member countries and manufacturers through the following regulations:

The Regulation on the Infrastructure for Alternative Fuels, which establishes objectives for member countries for the installation of recharging infrastructures for heavy vehicles in the EU in the coming years.

The proposed revision of the CO2 emission standards regulation for trucks which, if accepted, includes a 90% CO2 reduction target for new trucks by 2040.
