In-depth Study of Salesian House in Turin: Providing Support and Opportunities for Minors

The in-depth studies of the Fourth Commission of the Municipality of Turin, chaired by Vincenzo Camarda (PD), dedicated to actions in favor of minors, in particular unaccompanied foreigners, continue.

After the recent inspection in San Salvario, on 12 July 2023 the Commission visited the Michele Rua Salesian House, directed by Fr Stefano Mondin, in via Paisiello 37 in Turin, in the Barriera district of Milan, as requested by councilor Tony Ledda (PD) .

Fr Stefano illustrated the activities that are carried out there by the Salesian House, which revolve around three centres: the oratory with the Monterosa Cineteatro, the parish and the school.

the director did not hide the difficulties, not only economic, in managing the structure, with many problematic minors, absent families and safety problems. From last September to today – he explained – the Opera has suffered 14 thefts, even during the day, and the operators have been attacked and robbed several times in the evening, returning home.

There are 160 boys and girls attending nursery school, 250 primary school, 140 lower secondary school, coming from different cultures.

There are 400 girls and boys (60% non-Italian) who practice sports there: soccer, basketball, volleyball, rollerblading and dance. Soon, perhaps there will also be a climbing wall.

There are also active tailoring, IT and carpentry workshops, music courses and an educational vegetable garden.

There are five operators in the structure, but sometimes it is very tiring to manage after-school activities, also because there are many learning disabilities and language difficulties.

Furthermore, through Caritas dozens of families are assisted with economic support and job placement projects.

The oratory is then the great melting pot – said Don Stefano.- in which students of the school and young people of the neighbourhood, of every culture, meet together.

There are five cornerstones of the Salesian House – explained Don Stefano: family, hospitality, work, communication, evangelization. With one goal: hospitality.

The president Vincenzo Camarda (PD) thanked the Salesian Work for the important work it carries out every day, not only for assistance, but also for the active involvement of young people.

It is a fundamental place for the area – said Tony Ledda (PD) – with which the City must continue to interact and discuss, to meet the real needs of the area and address the critical issues together.

Ivana Garione (Moderates) has offered her willingness to collaborate with the Salesian House to draw up an act of direction for the City Council.

Lorenza Patriarca (PD) highlighted the importance of job placement and also confirmed her intention to work in synergy, with a positive vision, for the good of the neighbourhood.

Silvio Viale (+Europe & Italian Radicals) has proposed that the City coordinate the interventions for the redevelopment of the district.
For Pietro Tuttolomondo (PD) the impoverishment and isolation of the families in the neighborhood must be countered by favoring integration with the rest of the city.

Anna Borasi (PD) suggested a better coordination of resources, not only financial ones, and the need to enhance educational interventions.

For Ferrante De Benedictis (Brothers of Italy) the Salesian Work has brought prestige to Turin in the world, but it needs to be supported, not only from a financial point of view, but by intervening on the education and security of the territory and also on families.

Dorotea Castiglione (M5S) asked to deepen the theme of unaccompanied minors or with families not very present.
