Argentine soccer star Lionel Messi has signed a contract until 2025 with the US Major League Soccer (MLS) club Inter Miami, Saturday announced club.

It became known about Messi’s move to North America more than a month ago, but the signing of the contract was delayed because it was necessary to complete the formalities with MLS itself. The 36-year-old forward, who won the World Cup with Argentina last year in Qatar, is going to be introduced by the team on Sunday. Messi is expected to make his debut for England legend David Beckham’s side on Friday. “I am very happy to take this next step in my career at Inter Miami and the United States,” Messi, who will move to the United States from Paris Saint-Germain, where he spent the previous two years, said in a statement.

It was previously reported that Messi turned down a huge offer from Saudi Arabia’s Al-Hilal, which would have put him in competition with Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema as the highest-paid footballer on the planet, but he agreed to join Miami for other reasons as well – the deal includes cooperation with brands such as Adidas and Apple, which are MLS partners. Messi’s contract also includes an option that will allow the Argentine to buy shares in the Miami club after his career ends. It is estimated that Messi will earn around 60 million dollars per season.

In the Paris club, the Argentine scored 22 goals in 58 games, but before that he scored 474 goals in 520 matches of the Spanish championship. From 2003 to 2021, Messi was in the ranks of “Barcelona”.

Recognized by the International Association of Football Federations (FIFA) as the world’s best footballer in 2022, Messi has played 175 games for his country and scored 103 goals.
