Jacobs and Barkley: Stalemates with Franchise Tags

This person requested anonymity as he was not authorized to discuss this issue publicly.

Failure in negotiations could mean Jabobs will miss training camp, and possibly next season. Jacobs won’t suffer any financial loss by missing camp, but that could change if he were to miss NFL games.

Messages left with his agent, Chad Wiestling, have still not been returned.

The Raiders placed the franchise player tag on Jacobs on March 6, which means he will earn $10.1 million if he returns to play with the team this season. Veterans must report to camp on July 25, and training camp will begin the following day.

Jacobs has always maintained his position in the negotiations, even stating at one point that he was ready to transform “from hero to villain” if he had to play with the franchise player tag.

Jacobs led the NFL with 1,653 yards as the Raiders went 6-11 last season.

The absence of Jacobs is another tile on the head of the Raiders. Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo as well as their defensive end and first draft pick, Tyree Wilson, did not take part in voluntary summer practices due to foot injuries.

Barkley in the same situation

Saquon Barkley and the New York Giants are in the same kind of stalemate as Jacobs and the Raiders.

The Giants placed the concession player tag on their 26-year-old star running back in March, giving the two sides four months to reach a deal before the 4 p.m. deadline on July 17. . The talks continued to the limit, but broke down.

Barkley is unhappy with having to wear the franchise player label, after setting a career-high 1,312 yards and 10 rushing touchdowns with the Giants last season, in addition to finishing the campaign tied for the the New York team in catches (57). It alone explains much of the Giants’ success last season, as they made the NFL playoffs for the first time since 2016.

The $10.1 million salary would make Barkley among the highest-earning running backs in the league, but the 2018 NFL offensive rookie said it was disrespectful after he would have been one of the Giants’ headliners for the past five years.
