Japanese, Chinese, and Korean Athletes Dominate First Day of FISU World University Games

After a few years marked by the pandemic, sports competitions have once again been the protagonists of the summer. One of the most anticipated was undoubtedly the FISU World University Games, which are held in the Chinese city of Chengdu from July 28 to August 5.

The opening ceremony gave way to preliminary tests in various sports, and to four grand finals: judo, wushu, taekwondo and shooting. In these competitions the first gold medals have gone to Chinese, Japanese and Korean athletes, leaders on the first day of these games.

And it is that in judo the absolute protagonists have been the Japanese, who have won the gold medal in the men’s category -60kg and -66kg, and also in the women’s -48kg and -52kg. The Spanish Paula Beorlegui, Patricia Martín Gallardo, Gorka Sánchez and Mireia Rodríguez have also participated in this sport, who lost in the first qualifying rounds.

China, for its part, prevailed in wushu, a sport considered the most modern version of the classic kung-fu. In this discipline, Chinese and Hong Kong athletes took all six gold medals.

As for the third country in the ranking, the Republic of Korea, it has already won 2 gold medals in the discipline of Taekwondo and one in rifle shooting. And it is in this sport where we also have to mention India, which has given the surprise of the day by winning three gold medals, one in women’s rifle shooting, and the other two in pistol shooting, both individual and by equipment. With these three awards, India has placed fourth in the provisional ranking of these World University Games.

Tomorrow, Sunday, another four grand finals will be played, specifically archery by teams (male, female and mixed), as well as Rhythmic Gymnastics, Shooting (rifle and pistol) and again Taekwondo, this time in Poomsae style.
