Jelgava Hosts First Open-Air Taekwondo Tournament in Latvia

Jelgava will host the first taekwondo tournament in Latvia in an open arena

On August 19, in Jelgava, the “Jelgava beach open taekwondo” children’s and youth taekwondo tournament will be held at the ice skating rink of the Post Island. It will be the first taekwondo tournament in Latvia in an open arena.

“In other countries, for example in Greece and also in Estonia, this type of competition – in an open environment, by the water or on the beach – has already taken place. This allows more people, both spectators and passers-by, to be introduced to the Olympic sport of Taekwondo. We have a beautiful place in Jelgava, Postal Island, so I decided – why can’t the first taekwondo tournament in Latvia be held in an open arena right here?” The manager of the club “Olimpiks” Vitalijs Lepin-Žagars tells Jelgava municipal institution “Sporta servis centrs”.

Tournament participants will compete in several age groups: children born in 2015 and 2016, 2012-2014. children born in 2009, cadets (born in 2009-2011) and juniors (born in 2006-2008). There will also be several disciplines: kicks for speed, performance of formal exercises (pumze), sparring (kerugi). One participant can compete in several disciplines. The organizers plan that athletes from Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia will participate in the tournament. 15-20 athletes will represent Jelgava. Registration for the tournament takes place through the www.tpss.eu system.

The “Jelgava beach open taekwondo” tournament will start at 10 a.m. on August 19 at the Post Island ice rink, and the expected duration is until 5 p.m.
