Ahn Se-young (Samsung Life Insurance) has risen to the world number one in women’s badminton. 27 years after Bang Soo-hyun, she marked the first Korean player to become the world’s No. 1 player in women’s badminton.
In the women’s singles world rankings announced by the World Badminton Federation (BWF) on the 31st, Ahn Se-young scored 103,914 ranking points, pushing Akane Yamaguchi (Japan, 101,917 points) to second place and rising to first place. She recently reached the top of international competitions such as the Korea Open and Japan Open for two consecutive weeks, and Ahn Se-young, who lifted the championship trophy seven times this year alone, reached the world No. 1 for the first time in her life. Her world ranking is calculated by adding up her points earned through her performance in her most recent year alone.
It is a meaningful slant for badminton in Korea. After 27 years since Bang Su-hyeon in 1996, a player has risen to the top of the world in women’s singles. While Korean badminton has stood out in the doubles event, it was not easy to produce a player who ranked first in the world in singles after being pushed by China and Japan. However, after the Tokyo Olympics held in 2021, Ahn Se-young, a leading player, was born and produced the world’s No. 1 player in women’s singles for the first time in a long time.
Ahn Se-young returned home on the afternoon of the 31st after finishing the Japan Open. After Ahn Se-young took a break, she plans to compete at the World Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark on the 21st of next month and the Asian Games in Hangzhou scheduled for September.
