Kyrie Irving signs a contract with Dallas Mavericks of three years and 115 million euros

MADRID, 1 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The American point guard Kyrie Irving has reached an agreement with the Dallas Mavericks to remain in the Texas NBA franchise for three more years, with an option to become a free agent in the third year, at a rate of 126 million dollars -more than 115 million euros-, about 42 on average per season.

Irving, 31, who averaged 27 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists in 20 games with the Mavericks last season, had already shown his desire to continue playing alongside Slovenian Luka Doncic.

He was authorized to sign a maximum contract of up to five years and 272 million dollars -249 million euros- with Dallas, but opted for a shorter agreement, which allows the team room for maneuver to hire more players.

The NBA’s negotiating period began Friday and the deals won’t become official until the end of the league’s annual moratorium on July 6.

The Mavericks acquired Irving last season for Spencer Dinwiddie, Dorian Finney-Smith and draft compensation, but Irving explored other options during his free agent stint.

After helping the Cleveland Cavaliers win the NBA title in 2016, Irving became one of the most controversial players in the NBA, and his stints with the ‘Cavs’ themselves and the Brooklyn Nets ended with transfer requests.

Irving has played 671 games since he was selected number one in the 2011 Draft, averaging 23.4 points, 3.9 rebounds and 5.7 assists in his twelve seasons in the North American Basketball League.
