Marco Völler will stay with the Skyliners Frankfurt. After relegation from the basketball Bundesliga, the 34-year-old lost his job as sports manager at Hessen, but he could soon make his comeback in professional basketball.
Marco Völler is about to make a sporting comeback in German professional basketball. After witnessing the descent of the Skyliners from Frankfurt to the second German league as a sports manager, he could now play again as an active player.
Rudi Völler’s 34-year-old son will receive a contract for the coming season, as the Hessians announced on Friday. Although Völler should continue to play for the Fraport Skyliners Juniors, he has the opportunity to play in the Pro A with the first team.
Get fit first, then bag the rise
“I want to help where I can and I’m looking forward to the task. Our two teams will be super young next season. I want to support them with my experience and offer the boys orientation and a contact person on an equal footing,” said Völler. He still has “a lot of work to do to get really fit again”. He thanked the club for his chance as manager sport. The position was axed after relegation.
“Now, as a first step, I want to do everything on a sporting level to get the club back to where it belongs: in the top league!” he added. In the basketball upper house, Völler actually ended his professional career with the Skyliners in 2021.
The Hessians were recently relegated twice in a row from the Bundesliga. In the summer of 2022, the former German champion received a so-called wildcard, this time the transition to second division could not be averted.
