Masataka Yoshida’s Grand Slam Leads Red Sox to Victory, Ohtani Hits 34th Home Run in Angels’ Loss

Masataka Yoshida made his second major league grand slam and scored six points on Sunday. He led the Boston Red Sox to an 11-5 victory over the Chicago Cubs in the final of their three-game series.

Fellow World Baseball Classic winner Shohei Ohtani, meanwhile, hit his MLB-best 34th home run for the Los Angeles Angels in their 9-8 loss to the Houston Astros.

The day after his 30th birthday, having seen his multi-hit streak come to an end at eight games, Yoshida went 3-5 and scored two runs to help the Red Sox win the series at Wrigley Field.

He gave Boston a 6-0 lead with his two-out headbutt in the first game of the fifth inning on a 2-0 fastball by Cubs ace Justin Steele (9-3).

The southpaw followed with a two-run triple on a line drive to center field that made it 8-0 in the first game of the seventh inning.

Yoshida, whose .317 batting average was second-best in the American League on Sunday, said he closely analyzed Steele’s pitch before hitting the grand slam deep right.

“I checked the throwing trajectory of my last two catches and started this catch with this image in mind,” said the former Orix Buffaloes star. “His first shot was a big throw and I was able to kill him on my first swing.

For the Cubs, Seiya Suzuki went 0 for 3 with a walk.
