Matthias Casse Aims for Podium Finish at Judo Masters in Budapest

Matthias Casse (-81 kg) feels “on top” before the Judo Masters, which will be held next weekend in Budapest, the city where he won his world title in 2021.

“After the Worlds, I quickly started preparing for this Masters,” said the 26-year-old from Antwerp on Monday. “I worked hard. I participated in the Grand Slam in Mongolia (elimination in the first round, editor’s note) for the feeling of competition. One tournament was enough, I did not need more. The result was not the most important thing. I learned what we need to work on, at the technical level for example. These are details, but it is important in view of the Olympic Games.”

Casse notably completed internships in Alicante (Spain) and Papendal (Netherlands). “I was able to meet quality sparring partners. And I didn’t have any injuries, that’s very important. The feeling for this Masters is good. I feel on top.”

In Budapest, Casse would like to “finish on the podium.” “It won’t be easy, but it’s a nice challenge. My category is always tough. There is also a very talented new generation. People have been watching me for a few years. So I can’t always bring out my best judo It’s about continuing to innovate enough and trying to surprise my opponents.”

“I’m working on my judo and trying a lot of things,” continued the vice-champion of Europe and the world. “So I know what can work and what can’t. It works best in training, that’s why I don’t compete too much. I can keep the intensity of the training as high as possible. At the Games, my judo will have to be perfect.”

After the Masters, Casse will complete an internship in Italy and resume competition at the Baku Grand Slam (September 22-24).
