I was quite surprised to see the McLarens at this level, but it’s good for them to be well placed here. For my part, I am very happy to be in pole position.
In Q1 and Q2, it was a bit complicated, with wet areas, and you had to be careful. Of course you have to push, but we have a fast car so we don’t need to go to 100% of the limits. But in Q3, we had to give everything and put everything we could into the car, and at the finish, there wasn’t a huge gap. For us it’s still a beautiful day and I’m looking forward to tomorrow. »
Lando Norris (McLaren), 2nd in qualifying: “I was close. I was first in Q1, third in Q2 and close, two tenths, to being first in Q3. My last lap was a good lap, I could hear Zak (Brown, the McLaren manager) in my radio screaming. It’s great for me but also for Oscar (Piastri) and incredible for the whole team.
(On missing out on pole position) It’s Max (Verstappen) up front. He always ruins everything for everyone (smiles). I am very happy and I want to thank all the public, it is a special day for us. Oscar Piastri (McLaren), 3rd in qualifying: “I’m very, very happy. My qualification almost stopped in Q1 but I finally came back well in Q2 and I had a good lap in Q3. It’s a great result for the team.
Friday was a tough day. We suffered to put the car in the right window, but we did a good job attacking today (Saturday) and these conditions are favorable to our car, as we have already seen in Barcelona, Monaco or Canada. To finish Q3 this way is an incredible result. The new parts on the car work very well and you have to keep pushing. When you see where we started the season and where we are now, it’s nice. »
