Mets Trade Max Scherzer to Rangers in Blockbuster Deal

This was learned by the Associated Press from a source familiar with the transaction. This source told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity, as the announcement has yet to be made.

According to various sources, the Mets will receive one of the best Rangers prospects in Luisangel Acuna, an infielder and the younger brother of Atlanta Braves star player Ronald Acuna Jr.

As part of this transaction, again according to various sources, Scherzer has agreed to activate the last year of his contract, in 2024, for the sum of $ 43 million. Also, the Mets would have agreed to pay about $35 million of the remaining $58 million in the right-handed pitcher’s contract.

The Mets, one of the biggest disappointments this season, traded Scherzer two days after shipping stopper David Robertson to the Miami Marlins in exchange for two minor league players.

The Mets started the season with the largest payroll in all of baseball, at $353 million. However, they entered Saturday 17 games behind the Atlanta Braves, the National League East leaders, and down six and a half games in the draft standings.

The next question is what the Mets will do with Justin Verlander, another three-time Cy-Young Trophy winner who is under contract through the end of next season. Several teams could be interested in acquiring the 40-year-old right-hander.

After six straight campaigns with losing records, the Rangers have held first place in the American League West since the very beginning of the season, except for one day.

Three-time World Series winner as manager, Bruce Bochy is in his first season at the helm of the team.
