Miguel Herrera, technical director of Xolos de Tijuana, reported this Saturday that the new starting goalkeeper of the border team will be José Antonio Rodríguez, instead of José de Jesús Corona, who had served as the person in charge of the goal in the first duels of the club in the 2023 Opening of the MX League.
At a press conference, Piojo announced his decision and added that all the first-team goalkeepers are already aware of this situation.
“Toño is going to be the starting goalkeeper, that’s how I talked about it with Chuy. He knows the responsibility he has and that he has a World Cup goalkeeper behind him.”
Rodríguez will defend Tijuana’s goal in the team’s debut in the Leagues Cup, which will be against the Philadelphia Union this Saturday at 6:00 p.m., and will continue to be so as long as he maintains a good level, according to Herrera’s words.
“As long as Toño doesn’t make mistakes, he’s going to be the one to start the games. There will be rotations due to fatigue, but we’ll play with the best we have.”
Toño comes from a summer where he was present with the Mexican National Team in the Concacaf Nations League and Gold Cup, in which he fulfilled the role of substitute for Guillermo Ochoa.
Corona will have to wait on the bench
The former Cruz Azul goalkeeper arrived at the border as a reinforcement of the Tijuana team for the current tournament, being one of the team’s star hires.
Unfortunately for him, his start to the tournament has not been as expected, since he has made mistakes in the debut against Pumas, which cost points, as well as in the last match against La Máquina where they rescued a valuable comeback.
