The new season is about to kick off and with it come new rules. As of this month of July, some changes implemented by the International Football Association Board (IFAB), the body that dictates the laws of international football, come into effect.
The new rules are related to penalties, offsides, injury time and even disciplinary measures.
In addition, the term ‘kicks from the penalty mark’ is replaced by ‘penalties’.
Learn about the laws that come into effect in July:
Goalkeepers must stay on top of the goal line, face to face with the penalty taker, without touching the crossbar, posts or goal nets until the ball is kicked. Goalkeepers must not unfairly distract the opponent who is going to take the penalty, so as not to disrespect the game and the kicker himself;
Time wasted by a team during goal celebrations must also be taken into account when determining the added time;
If it is not possible to identify which member of the technical team, bench player, expelled player or person responsible for the team committed an infraction, the referee must sanction the head coach with a card;
If a player or other member of the technical team is on the pitch when his team scores a goal and interferes with the move, the referee must call a foul at the place where that person was. If there is no interference, the goal will be validated, as well as if this invasion happens by a player or member of the staff of the team that conceded the goal;
If a player is offside and receives the ball from an opponent who plays it deliberately and when he has control, no offside should be called, even if the defender deliberately hands over;
The player who committed a penalty should only be expelled if he did not try to dispute the ball. If he holds, pulls or pushes the opponent, without being able to play the ball, he must receive an expulsion order;
The reserve assistant referee will be able to help the refereeing team when he has a clearer view of what happened on the field. Until now, only the two assistant referees, the fourth official, the two additional assistant referees and VAR/AVAR could intervene.
