One in seven children is a victim of violence in sport in France

907: this is the number of reports since 2020 generated for the various forms of violence in French sport. 424 triggered measures from the administration, said Monday the Minister of Sports Amélie Oudéa-Castéra by revealing the results of the 4th study dedicated to the phenomenon.

“One in seven children are victims of violence in sport today. We cannot let such a phenomenon become encysted in our society”, reacted the minister, while underlining the ratio of 47% between reports and measures. “We are not far from half, it is substantial”, she estimated.

These reports as of December 31, 2022, which concern in particular 65 federations, 11 more than in 2022, took place in 97 departments and notably led to 27 definitive radiation while the prosecutors were seized of 150 cases, indicates this report. 44% of respondents were also the subject of a complaint or a handrail.

Mostly minor victims

With mostly female victims (78%), minors (82%, including 41% under the age of 15), sexual violence (83%), caused by sports educators (62%), the major trends of previous years continue, but subtleties also appear.

“We observe a very strong increase in recent facts against old facts during the first year of the cell,” said Fabienne Bourdais, ministerial delegate for the fight against violence in sport. “85% of the facts concerned have been committed since 2020. Freedom of speech is a very important point. »

250,000 educators checked

The ministry controls 250,000 educators and more than a million volunteers a year, five times more than a year before, added Fabienne Bourdais.

Regarding sexual violence, “the 45,000 volunteers for the 2024 Olympics will be trained”, assured Isabelle Lonvis-Rome, Minister Delegate for Equality between Women and Men.

Amélie Oudéa-Castéra, who calls for “updating an outdated high-level culture”, historically generating violence, on the other hand welcomed “a season a little better than the previous one” in the professional football environment.
