Outrage and Solidarity: Tennis World Reacts to Controversial Incident at Hungarian Grand Prix

The world of tennis is still in shock over what happened during the match between the Chinese Shuai Zhang and the Hungarian Amarissa Kiara Toth at the Hungarian Grand Prix, in a video that has already gone around the world and has aroused the indignation of the tennis world and in turn the tennis world’s solidarity with Shuai Zhang.

One of the first players to condemn what happened was the Greek Maria Sakkari, who cannot explain the episode suffered by Zhang and who asked that Toth no longer play on the women’s circuit. “Shuai Zhang is the nicest player on tour!! This girl, Toth, should be banned from playing on the tour.”

The French Kristina Mladenovic was also very firm in her condemnation, calling the attitude of both the chair umpire and the Hungarian tennis player unacceptable. “Unacceptable error by the chair umpire and unacceptable reaction from her rival! You are in another league Shuai Zhang. We are with you!”

Another great figure of the circuit like Victoria Azarenka wanted to regret what happened with this message: “This is another level of unsportsmanlike conduct. Incredible”. An indignation that the recent Wimbledon finalist Ons Jabeur also expressed: “All the support for Shuai. This is unacceptable”.

The Russian Daria Kasatkina was also very outraged: “My God, and this reaction from her rival? I can not believe it. Very bad chair umpire and very bad sports conduct. Shuai, a very strong hug, my friend”. A Kasatkina that did not stop there, since she did not hesitate to accuse Toth of being a “rat” with an emoji on her social networks criticizing her unsportsmanlike attitude.

Overwhelmed by all these displays of support, Shuai Zhang herself wrote a message on her social networks in which she regretted the line judge’s mistake and thanked all the messages received. “All the efforts while training have been in vain, because when you want to hit close to the line, and even if the ball hits the line, it is still OUT. I love all the boys and girls who are supporting me and who are by my side. Many players have sent me many beautiful messages, I love you and appreciate your comments. I will push forward and stay strong.”

The massive shows of support for Shuai Zhang have forced the WTA to issue a statement in which they have announced that they will investigate what happened and that they are studying a possible case of racism. “The WTA has zero tolerance for racism in any form or context. The unfortunate incident that took place on Tuesday at the Hungarian Grand Prix and subsequent postings are being reviewed and a decision will be made.”
