The addition of the Arizona franchise means that all 30 NBA organizations will have an affiliate in the league. Phoenix previously operated in the G League with a team called the Northern Arizona Suns, which former owner Robert Sarver later sold to the Detroit Pistons in 2020.

Since his arrival in the NBA, Ishbia has sought to make the Valley of the Sun the epicenter of basketball. In the last two weeks he also announced his partnership with Gray Television to create a streaming channel that will bring free access to Suns and Mercury games to more than 2.8 million homes in Arizona.
