Player Ratings: Reviewing the Season of Virtus Bologna

Once the season is over and already fully immersed in the basketball market in view of the next one, let’s review, for the last time, the season of Virtus Bologna, with the pagellone of all its protagonists.

A premise before starting: giving votes is always an arduous and ominous task. In this case they are given not thinking about them in an absolute way, but taking into account what the expectations were, in terms of role and performance, for each player at the beginning of the season. In short, with equal returns, half a vote more or less will go to that player who, compared to what was expected of him, offered a return higher or lower than expected.

Semi Nail Polish 7

Championship: 29 games, 9.3 points, 47.6% from 3, 67.3% true shooting, 21′, 3.8 rebounds | Euroleague: 24 games, 10.5 points, 46.1% from 3, 67.4% true shooting, 18.3% usage, 24′, 3.9 rebounds

Without a doubt the best purchase of the Virtussina season. He came with high expectations from one point of view defensivefully respected, to which he added a three-point shot always very dangerous. For points per game, he is the best scorer of the team in the Euroleague, despite having confirmed that he is not a pure striker, especially when creating ball in hand. He has proven to be a high-level player for the European context. Injuries were a problem, with muscle problems that made him suffer all season and caused him to miss twenty-nine games overall.

Isaiah Cordinier 7

Championship: 25 games, 9.8 points, 36.2% from 3, 62.9% true shooting, 19.9% usage, 23′, 4 rebounds, 2.3 assists | Euroleague: 19 games, 6.6 points, 23.9% from 3, 53.2% true shooting, 20.9% usage, 18′, 2.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists

For Cordinier this was a very important season. That of his debut in the Euroleague, where he had to demonstrate his being able to be an impact player even at the highest European level. The beginning was quite troubled, also due to physical problems that allowed him to play just over half of the games. But once he settled in, he was definitely one of the more positive players at Virtus. The energy he brought has often been fundamental for a team that, from this point of view, has been lacking. High-level defensive versatility, also confirmed in the Finale series in the LBA against a complex client like Shavon Shields. The offensive limits remain in the scarce danger of shooting and a ball-in-hand creation still often limited to finishing with the rim. But it is certainly one of the fixed points from which the bianconeri must start again.

Milos Teodosic 6.5

League: 23 games, 9 points, 37.3% from 3, 57.2% true shooting, 23.6% usage, 21′, 5.3 assists, 2.4 losses | Euroleague: 26 games, 10.3 points, 39.7% from 3, 62% true shooting, 29.9% usage, 20′, 6.1 assists, 3.4 losses

Positive season for Teodosic, who has once again confirmed himself as the team’s main offensive creation point. In the Euroleague he had great nights, scoring and making his teammates score. In general, his positive impact on the team was evident. Looking back on the season though, it was also just as evident how the rigidities of a year of over eighty games have not been easy to manage. Thirty games missed due to injury, objective difficulties, in the Euroleague, when the level of the opponents has risen. Difficulties also emerged in the championship final with Milan. After four wonderful years, perhaps this is the right moment for the paths to part.

Marco Belinelli 6.5

Championship: 42 games, 12.9 points, 37.2% from 3, 60.3% true shooting, 26.7% usage, 21′ | Euroleague: 21 games, 10 points, 41.5% from 3, 59.8% true shooting, 26% usage, 17′

After a not easy start, in Europe, also due to a physical condition that appeared not to be optimal, Belinelli’s vintage took off from the end of December onwards. In the championship he has always been the protagonist, while in Europe he has found a place in rotation after about ten games (and some ill-concealed stomach aches, not exactly the best when you are the captain of the team). He confirmed he could be high level scorer also in the Euroleague. His volleys from behind the arc have been vital to the team and have rocked games on multiple occasions. He remains a player to protect defensively, but he has proven to be an added value in attack that is not easy to do without.
