The future of Major League Baseball (MLB) appears to be in good hands after San Francisco Giants prospect Brett Auerbach made the catch of the year in the minor leagues, specifically in Class A Strong when he dove over the dugout railing for the ball on a mammoth play.

D-backs prospect Kristian Robinson was probably hoping for another shot in his first at-bat when he hit Eric Silva’s first pitch. As the ball flew toward the Emeralds’ dugout, Auerbach removed his mask and began a sprint to try and make a play.

His own teammates didn’t expect him to try to catch the ball, because when Auerbach leapt forward and completed the throw, they just watched as he flew over the railing and plummeted headfirst to the dugout floor.

The catch was so impressive that even the opposing team’s social media manager had to congratulate him.

Auerbach’s thing is more surprising considering he’s a utility man who has played five positions so far this season: second, third base, left field, center and catcher. In 29 games, only five has been a catcher.

MLB’s Flying Prospect

Last season, also as a receiver, he made a leaping catch into the net for Double-A Richmond. In spring training this year he also excelled with a diving play to prevent a potential run from scoring.
