SV Werder Bremen Coach Ole Werner Patient as Flank Construction Continues

At SV Werder Bremen there are still two construction sites after the training camp: on the right and left flanks. Coach Ole Werner is still patient.

Tim Lüddecke reports from the training camp in Zell am Ziller (Austria).

0-0 against RB Leipzig and 1-1 against English second division club Ipswich Town. Coach Ole Werner was “mostly satisfied” with the performance of SV Werder Bremen over two 60-minute blitz tournaments in Innsbruck. However, it was obvious that the flanks had not yet developed the dynamism and offensive initiative that are needed in the 3-4-3 system practiced in each case.

At first they played against Leipzig Manuel Mbom (right) and 18-year-old Leon Opitz, Oliver Burke (right) and Cimo Röcker from the U23s, who was called up to the training camp after Lee Buchanan left, were in action against Ipswich. “I liked Leon for his age. Burkey is doing well too,” praised Werner first, but the Werder coach made it clear in the next sentence that “these are two positions where we’re looking for reinforcement. It’s no secret.” said the 35-year-old: “It’s important that we grow before the start of the season.”

Sager is an option at the start of the season

Although both regular players from last season are still under contract with Werder, Anthony Jung (left) was used in the back three this time – and Mitchell Weiser (right) has still not returned to team training, was originally supposed to return to Austria. “It didn’t happen because he was ill for the first few days. Otherwise it would have happened like this,” explained Werner: “He has now made up for his progress and is in a good place.”

In the coming week, Weiser is supposed to return to the pitch in Bremen – and would then also be a candidate for the start of the competitive game: “I wouldn’t rule that out at the moment. It’s not like he missed something, either he doesn’t already know. It’s just a physical question,” explained the Bremen coach.

We have to make the right moves

It is possible that by then new competition will have emerged for the outer track on the Weser – even if finalization is still a long way off. So far, Werner has shown understanding, although he obviously wants his team together as early as possible: “It is clear to me and it was clearly discussed how this summer of transfers can go. I know that we have to take a very close look at who can really strengthen us.” , he explained.

SV Werder has to use its financial resources wisely for this – and that’s why “it’s just taking a few days longer,” said Werner. In any case, he prefers that to acting hastily and not carefully on the transfer market: “In the end, it’s crucial for me that we make the right moves – because you don’t put together a squad for two game days but for 34 games.”
