Talgo’s Intercity enter service in Egypt |

ENR has confirmed the entry into commercial operation of the sixth and last Intercity train for daytime trips on the line that connects Alexandria with Cairo and Aswan, thus making official the delivery of the rolling stock that makes up the fleet supplied to this company by Talgo with more than five months before the scheduled date. These trains have been manufactured in Rivabellosa (Álava).

The first train of the project began to operate in December 2022; and from then until today, the rest of the units have been delivered to the Egyptian operator and have gradually entered into service, as reported by Talgo in a statement.

The trains, belonging to the ‘Talgo 230’ platform of compositions for Intercity or Long Distance type services, and whose cars have been manufactured in Rivabellosa (Álava), run at a maximum commercial speed of 160 km/h and have a capacity for about 500 travelers each.

The ENR units are made up of a diesel-electric locomotive, a technical car, and 14 towed passenger cars. The contract, worth 158 million euros, includes comprehensive maintenance for at least eight years, using local labor trained by the Spanish manufacturer.

The interior design of these trains has been designed based on the experience of the Spanish company in compositions and high-comfort long-distance services such as those supplied for the Mecca-Medina high-speed line, in Saudi Arabia, with certified interior air conditioning for extreme temperatures, WiFi connectivity, and infotainment systems with LED screens in each of the seats located in first class.

The Egyptian state-owned company ENR began the purchase process in August 2016 as part of a project financed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the final bid submission phase closed in October 2018.
