NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Titans are going back to their Oilers days by donning throwback uniforms this season.

The Titans announced this week that they will wear the uniforms the franchise used from 1981 as the Houston Oilers to the Tennessee Oilers after leaving Houston for a new stadium in Nashville.

Tennessee will wear the throwback uniforms for two home games this season.

The Columbia blue jersey, white covers and white helmet, with the oil rig with a red bar was the most used combination by the franchise that was founded in 1960 by the late Bud Adams, in the AFL.

“This was an original AFL team, so there’s a great tradition and now people will be able to see what it’s about and they’re going to remember this vast history,” said Surf Melendez, Titans vice president and chief creative officer.

The kit, created with Nike, includes a nod to the team coached by Bum Phillips, with Hall of Famer Earl Campbell having “Luv Ya Blue” emblazoned inside the jersey’s collar.

Those Oilers reached back-to-back seasons in the AFC Championship Game, losing both against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
