The NBA Introduces In-Season Cup Competition with Finals in Las Vegas

NBA introduces cup competition – finals in Vegas

The NBA introduces an annual mid-season cup competition with a grand finale in Las Vegas. The North American elite league of basketball announced its concept on Saturday, which according to Commissioner Adam Silver “was discussed 15 years ago” and is reminiscent of cup competitions in soccer.

The “In-Season Tournament” features games for all 30 NBA teams in six groups of five on Tuesdays and Fridays in November. The group winners and two wildcard teams make it to the quarter-finals, followed by the semi-finals and the big final in the gambler’s paradise in the Nevada desert on December 9th. The winner receives the NBA Cup.

In order to reduce the burden, the group stage and the knockout rounds of the tournament format, with the exception of the final, also count as regular league games. “The concept itself is nothing new in sport,” said Silver, “for those who follow international football it’s a tradition. So we thought, what a perfect opportunity for a league with global reach like the NBA.”
