Ukrainian Switolina continues triumphant march at Wimbledon

Ukraine’s Jelina Switolina continued her impressive triumph at Wimbledon. The 28-year-old won on Tuesday in London against the Polish world number one Iga Swiatek 7: 5, 6: 7 (5: 7), 6: 2 and thus made it into the semi-finals of the grass classic for the second time after 2019. Switolina, only in the main draw thanks to a wildcard from the organizers, converted her second match point after 2:50 hours and was then celebrated by the spectators.

In the semifinals on Thursday Switolina meets the Czech Marketa Vondrousova. The 24-year-old surprisingly prevailed in her quarterfinals against the American Jessica Pegula 6: 4, 2: 6, 6: 4 and thus survived the quarterfinals for the first time in her tennis career at Wimbledon. The 2019 French Open finalist converted her second match point after 1:55 hours.

With power tennis

Switolina got off to a poor start on Center Court. As against the former world number one Viktoria Asarenka from Belarus in the previous round, Switolina seemed nervous and was twice a break in the first set. But then Switolina improved, played much more aggressively and put Swiatek under pressure with her power tennis. The Pole, who recently won the French Open, got nervous and made a few minor mistakes. Switolina took advantage of this and got the first set.

In the second round, Swiatek was again ahead by a break. With the great will to win, which has carried Switolina through the entire tournament, the Ukrainian came back again and managed to equalize. But Swiatek fought back and equalized the set in the tie-break. Now the momentum seemed to be on the side of the world number one. But in the third round the Pole suddenly lost control. Swiatek made many slight mistakes that Switolina used to turn again.
