LEÓN (Mexico) — The United States overcame a tough obstacle this Sunday by winning 65-56 Argentina in group A of the FIBA Women’s AmeriCup 2023, which is held at the Domo de la Feria in León, Guanajuato, Mexico.
The North Americans, current champions of the tournament, did not have their best collective night, however, they managed to prevail. On two occasions they resisted the Argentine push. In the third quarter they lost a four-point lead and even trailed by five, but the defensive intensity gave them a breather to finish the stretch 49-40.
When they seemed headed for victory, Argentina returned to the attack and came back from a deficit of 10 points. But this time, with the score even at 56, they broke away for good to lead the group along with Brazil.
Rickea Jackson finished with 17 points and five rebounds, while Lauren Betts had a double-double of 10 points and 11 boards. The center played a key role when the rival zone defense prevented the flow of the American attack.
For his part, Angel Reese took 15 raffle balls, but offensively he finished with only two hits in nine attempts to total five points. In field goals, the quintet exhibited an irregular 35 percent (24-67).
The United States (2-0) will have the day off this Monday and on Tuesday the 4th they will face Brazil (2-0). The jump between two is scheduled at 2:40 p.m. local time.
Meanwhile, Argentina (0-1) made its debut in the tournament. Point guard Melisa Gretter flirted with the triple double by adding 11 points —including three triples—, nine rebounds and the same number of assists. This Monday they will collide with Brazil in the South American classic starting at 2:40 p.m.
