VAR in more matches in Champions League, Europa League and Conference League | Football

UEFA will use VAR in all qualifying rounds of the Champions League. The video referee is also used earlier than before in the Europa League and the Conference League.

Last season, the VAR was only present in the Champions League from the third qualifying round. It means that the video arbitrator in the ball of millions is used more in 63 matches than last season.

In the Europa League and the Conference League, the VAR has so far only been used from the main tournament. In the Europa League this now applies from the third qualifying round. In the Conference League, the video arbitrator is present from the play-offs.

UEFA wants to use VAR in the Europa League from the start in the following season and also introduce it earlier in the Conference League. But according to the association, it remains to be seen whether this is feasible due to the large number of matches.

The VAR entered the Champions League in the 2018/2019 season – Ajax’s successful season. Since then, 1,648 international matches have been played in which the video arbitrator was present.

FC Twente will be the first of five Dutch clubs to play in Europe next season. The 2010 national champion will play at home against Hammarby IF in the second preliminary round of the Conference League on July 27. The return is in Sweden a week later.
