The first session on Sunday went according to plan. On Monday morning, however, the weather threw a spanner in the works for VfL Bochum.

Oliver Bitter reports from the VfL Bochum training camp in Gais (South Tyrol).
Coach Thomas Letsch initially gathered his players on the pitch, but because heavy rain set in and a thunderstorm threatened, the players quickly left the training ground in Gais in the morning.
Unaccustomed frustration for the Bochum delegation, which had been able to train in the best weather in South Tyrol in the two previous years. This time there were long faces on the second day of practice and the weather forecast for the next two days is not promising. From time to time there will be rain and storms.
Without further ado, Letsch sent his players on a power course that was set up in the fire station. After lunch, Letsch, sports director Patrick Fabian and Marc Lettau, technical director, put their heads together. It will have been about the further planning of the training camp, but of course also about personnel questions about the Bochum squad for the third Bundesliga year.
Maybe three new players will come; there is a need for action, especially for the defensive. Danilo Soares, who has had a moderate season for him, is practically set on the left. But the Brazilian is more of a player for a system with a back four, Letsch also wants to play in a 3-5-2 or 3-4-3 from time to time. So we are still looking for a player for the left flank.
Leitsch’s ball is in the Mainz field
In addition, at least one central defender should come, preferably a left-footed player. A candidate who would fit has long been chosen, but is currently far too expensive. VfL have been aiming for a return for Maxim Leitsch for a long time, who matured in the Bochum talent factory and became a seasoned Bundesliga player at VfL before moving to FSV Mainz 05 a year ago.
Because he was not happy in Mainz, a return, possibly on loan, is of course conceivable and could advance Leitsch’s career. Because of course there is hope that he would find his old form again in his former environment. But both sides are still far apart; the ball is now on the side of Mainz to significantly reduce the financial gap.
On Wednesday, VfL will play its first game at the training camp in South Tyrol. The opponent in Brixen is Spezia Calcio, who have been relegated from Serie A. Then, for the first time in the pre-season, regular keeper Manuel Riemann should be in the Bochum goal, who had missed the first days of training due to muscular problems.
