Vondroušová celebrated her birthday in London, she is starting to like weed

“Before the grass part of the season, I thought I wanted to break it,” said Vondroušová. “I started to approach it with a more open mind. I’m glad that I did well already at the tournament in Berlin, and every match here is great for me. I think that you have to lose a little. I’ve already played a few tournaments on grass , so I think it’s getting better,” added Vondroušová.

On a faster surface, the famous clay player and Roland Garros finalist from 2019 is getting used to different movement, rebounds, strikes and strategy. Now she equaled the previous year’s maximum at Wimbledon. “I put it together in such a way that it is not possible to win every match 6:3. On the return you fight for every ball, you have to concentrate more on the serve and generally put up with the grass. Some games on the return are fast and you may not even get the ball on the court, ” she compared.

He does not have significant expectations of himself at Wimbledon, at the same time he wants to take advantage of the comfort of the game and improve his game. “After Paris, I said that now I will have a few tournaments without stress. Of course, you still have stress, but even in Berlin, where I reached the quarterfinals, I wasn’t nervous. I feel good,” said the native of Sokolov.

She is also helped by coach Jan Hernych in the team, who liked the game on grass. “Our games are different and it’s not easy to transfer that game to me. But he helped me realize what to play on grass and what not. You have to take more risks here,” she pointed out.

Despite pulling out of last week’s Eastbourne dress rehearsal with a sore groin, she now feels fit. “I wanted to be fit for Wimbledon and not finish somewhere else and not play again,” she explained.

She had her 24th birthday just before the start of the Grand Slam tournament in London. On Tuesday, she celebrated them at home with her family, on Wednesday he already made her a Hernych dinner in London. “He made me a salad. I guess so I wouldn’t be too fat,” joked Vondroušová, the 42nd ranked player.

While she missed most of last year due to wrist surgery, she has been feeling fit since returning at the end of last year. “Perhaps I experienced the absence in Paris more than in Wimbledon, but now that I feel good, I am grateful that I can be here. Last year, my hand was in a cast and I couldn’t move it at all,” she recalled. “I have to say that since then, it hasn’t hurt me once. I don’t even feel it when it’s cold. I’m glad for that,” she added.

To improve the maximum at Wimbledon, she will compete with the twelfth seeded Russian Veronika Kuděrmětova. “It will be quite difficult. I did beat her in Miami, but the concrete is different. On the contrary, the grass suits her terribly, she serves quite well and she played the final in Hertogenbosch even now. It will probably be one of the most difficult draws that could have been on grass. But on grass, it’s a matter of a few balls, so anything can happen. If we hold our serves, one can break it with one or two balls,” added Vondroušová.
